It’s never too early to party!

What is Aqua Zumba?

Aqua Zumba integrates the winning formula of Latin and international dance music beats with a water-based workout based on classic aqua aerobics exercises. The music is energizing and you’ll have fun burning calories!

How is Aqua Zumba® different from the land-based Zumba Fitness® classes? The typical land-based Zumba dance steps, such as cha-cha, merengue, salsa, reggaeton and mambo, are more exaggerated and slower in the water. This doesn’t mean you are not getting a workout since your body works three to four times harder than on land when you are immersed at chest level depth. For example, you will use large muscle movements by reaching your arms and lifting your legs in the water, as well as circling your hips and shoulders to a strong Latin beat at half tempo to adjust for the water’s resistance. Keeping up with the beat while maintaining good body alignment keeps your core working hard!

Can I do Aqua Zumba if I have any joint issues? Because 70 to 75 percent of your body weight is displaced in the water at chest level, your knees, hips and back undergo less pounding when doing Aqua Zumba. Getting your physician’s approval is advised and also ask the instructor about modifications.

Who would be successful at Aqua Zumba? Aqua Zumba is designed for anyone who can follow easy dance movements and who enjoys being in the water. Generally, all ages and ability levels “enjoy the party” and benefit from the high energy movements and music. Seniors do very well in this type of low-impact class and easily build endurance while toning muscles..

Do I need to know how to swim? No swimming ability is required since you are standing on the bottom in rib cage to chest level water.

What is the cost for a class? The good news is that your first class is free! Try it out, and if you like it, exercise passes are available for purchase for families, seniors and adults. Contact the Aquatics Center at 206-842-2302 for details.
